The Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii says it won’t survive past the summer if proposed legislative cuts become a reality. VASH was founded in 1997 by the Honolulu Rotary Club when it realized that visitors had no aid organization. Jessica Lani Rich, president and CEO, said she is shocked the program could lose its funding.

Sailor s suicide is the third tied to Hawaii s submarine force in past 16 months

By ALLISON SCHAEFERS | The Honolulu Star-Advertiser | Published: April 12, 2021 HONOLULU (Tribune News Service) The death of a sailor of a self-inflicted gunshot after a barricade situation at the The Kahala Hotel & Resort was the third tied to Hawaii s submarine force in the past 16 months. The Navy confirmed that the sailor was assigned to the Pacific Fleet submarine force. However, they did not release the sailor s identity, military assignment or rank. The incident began before 6 p.m. Saturday when the 40-year-old man barricaded himself in a room at the hotel and communicated with family that he was suicidal, according to the Honolulu Police Department s Criminal Investigative Division.
