Councillors have approved a twice-monthly market in Thornbury High Street against the wishes of some traders and residents. Fifteen objections, including from the town’s chamber of commerce, were submitted opposing the block street trading application from market organisers Green Top Events citing concerns about road safety and shops losing trade. But South Gloucestershire Council’s licensing sub-committee granted permission after hearing most of the stallholders, on the second and fourth Saturday of each month, would eventually be local traders and artisans and that it would increase stores’ customers. Gary Marsh, owner of Papilio at Heritage, told members: “Bluntly the days when there was enough footfall and custom for shops that we were able to support a street market as well as the high street retailers are long gone.

ATLANTA - The Home Depot Foundation surprised dozens of local Atlanta veterans with special early Christmas care kits.
Officials with the foundation say the home care packages were delivered door-to-door to 24 veterans who live at the Quest Veterans Village on Rock Street in Atlanta.
The kits included clothes, shoes, bedding, housewares, personal care items, and grocery gift cards - each one based on the veteran s specific needs.
The gifts follow another surprise earlier in December that the foundation would provide rental assistance for the 24 vets.

Work described as ‘end run around village law’
An excavation at 29-31 Rock St. in Cold Spring that was halted last week by a stop-work order will be addressed on Dec. 23 at a public hearing.
The project, which was discussed at length at the Tuesday (Dec. 8) meeting of the Village Board, was referred on Dec. 2 to the Historic District Review Board by Charlotte Mountain, the village code enforcement officer. Neighbors claimed the application for excavating should have been approved by the HDRB and the Planning Board before the permit was issued.
