Nearly 200 seniors will soon be surfing with a little help from Hastings County.
The Rural and Remote Seniors E-Connect Program will give internet access to 199 people in central and North Hastings. It’s funded by $24,300 from Employment and Social Development Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors program.

Erin Rivers, the county’s director of community and human services, reported ongoing wellness checks by her workers found seniors in rural areas are finding it difficult during the pandemic to stay in touch with family and friends.

A new survey starting April 20 will gather data on homelessness in Belleville in an attempt to improve the community’s response.
Scheduled to continue until April 26, it will be led by members of Bridge Street United Church in partnership with Hastings County employees and local agencies.

It’s intended to provide a “snapshot” of the situation and determine the minimum number of people who are homeless in the city, the partners stated Wednesday in a news release.
A survey will be taking place from April 20 to 26th.
Those who are experiencing homelessness, including those who may be staying with family and friends temporary, are encouraged to participate.

Those who do not have access to a phone can take the survey at Bridge Street United Church during the daily lunch, 11:30am – 1:00pm, or at the Salvation Army during the daily supper, 4:00 – 5:30pm.
Organizers say that the information collected will help the community improve their response.
“This survey is part of the coordinated Point-in Time Counts under Reaching Home: Canada’s Homelessness Strategy. In March and April 2021, individuals experiencing homelessness will be counted in more than 60 communities across the country. The coordinated effort will help to create a picture of homelessness in communities across Canada,” note organizers.
