If someone sexually assaults you, yell, “Fire!,” Abbey Podbielski learned growing up. “If you yell ‘rape,’ nobody will do anything,” said Podbielski, an Alpena resident and a survivor of childhood sexual assault. Every year, Alpena County sexual assault survivors disclose dozens of rapes and other sex crimes to police, advocates for sexual assault survivors, family members, and others. If national statistics hold true, those reports represent only a fraction of the assaults actually occuring in the county. In recent years, Alpena County leaders secured grants, provided training, and collaborated with other agencies to more effectively care for survivors and hold perpetrators accountable.

Annually, since 1990, each FBI field office presents the Director’s Community Leadership Award to an individual or organization in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to the education and prevention of crime in their communities. Dr. Price, an administrative director within the Bon Secours Richmond Health System, is a certified Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) for Adults/Adolescents (SANE-A) and Pediatrics/Adolescents (SANE-P), and holds an Advanced Forensic Nursing Certification (AFN-BC).

AJ Taylor3 hours agoLast Updated: April 21, 2021 April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Secretary of State Paul Pate is reminding Iowans that address confidentiality is available for those needing an extra layer of protection. Iowa’s Safe at Home program provides a substitute address for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, trafficking, and stalking. The program is administered by the Iowa Secretary of State’s Office. One in five women and one in 38 men have experienced rape or attempted rape in their lifetime, according to the CDC. Last year in Iowa, there were nearly 3,000 convictions for sexual assault, domestic violence, and stalking. It is an issue in all 99 counties.
