Fatima Smith, an advocate for victims of sexual abuse, remembers something important her mother once told her. “My mom told me an obnoxious amount of times, ‘if someone, anyone touches you or hurts you, tell me. I don’t care if it’s your father, uncle, just tell me.”  But Smith says that after her cheerleading coach used house keys she forgot in his car to enter her home, then her room where she awoke to him touching her, she “didn’t say anything for almost a year later.”  “I loved cheerleading. I loved my coach. This bad thing happened,” she recalls. “But I didn’t know if I really wanted to say anything.”

(KOLD News 13) - A legislative proclamation sponsored by State Representative Shawnna LM Bolick (R-20) was read on the floor of the Arizona House of Representatives today recognizing April 2021 as the 20th anniversary of the official declaration of Sexual Assault Awareness Month, and honoring victims and survivors: Whereas, sexual violence is a dehumanizing form of abuse that harms every person’s right to live free; and Whereas, rape, sexual assault, and sexual harassment have extensive and widespread physical and mental health implications, including post-traumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, depression, homelessness, eating disorders, and suicide; and

Exhibit at Montana Capitol honors crime victims and survivors By: Jonathon Ambarian and last updated 2021-04-06 13:36:50-04 HELENA — Three tables have been set up in the Montana State Capitol rotunda, with 12 place settings – each one representing a loved one lost to violent crime or someone living through the aftermath of a crime. The Montana Department of Corrections’ Victim Services Program organized the “Empty Place at the Table” exhibit. Victims or their family members placed personal items at each place, as a way to show the loss of a person or a part of oneself as a result of a crime.
