A former South Carolina fugitive will spend the rest of his life, and then some, in Pennsylvania prisons after the 2018 rape and murder of 87-year-old Virginia Barbour, an Adams County judge decided Wednesday.
Kristopher Gartrell, 50, was also deemed to be a Sexually Violent Predator at his sentencing hearing on Wednesday, a designation given by the state Sexual Offender Assessment Board, according to Adams County District Attorney Brian Sinnett.
Barbour was attacked when Gartrell went into her unlocked home in November 2018, in the 100 block of Peach Glen Idaville Road in Huntington Township, according to police.

AKRON, Ohio (WOIO) - Summit County Prosecutor Sherri Bevan Walsh announced today that a Summit County jury found Prentice Smith, 45, of Akron, guilty of four cold-case rapes.
Smith was found guilty of five counts of Rape with Sexually Violent Predator specifications and four counts of Kidnapping.
The rapes occurred in Jan. of 2011, March of 2015, May of 2015, and Dec. of 2018, according to the press release.

Texas’s civil commitment program for sexually violent offenders has earned a reputation as an unforgiving place. Much of that is by design.
Each of the 378 men in it has already served his full prison term, some 20 years or longer. After their sentences were up, Texas evaluated them as too likely to re-offend, however, so they were ordered kept locked up indefinitely until ready to rejoin the free world. Their average age is nearing 60.
The program’s sole facility, a collection of low buildings and temporary trailers, sits amid fields on the outskirts of the rural Panhandle community of Littlefield surrounded by two razor-wire-topped fences. Buildings are locked and outfitted with security cameras. Even so, many residents must also wear GPS ankle monitors.
