West valley schools: Black high school, middle school groups unite to reflect, share

Responding to local Black students struggling with the recent violent activities at the U.S. Capitol a few weeks ago, advisors to the district’s Black Student Union and Junior Black Achievers groups brought members and guests together to reflect and share in a virtual platform last week.
“Students were bothered by what they saw,” said Joi Cox, who has been coordinating the work being done across the district to support the students. “We provided a safe place where students can share their feelings.”
Glendale High School had a higher graduation rate than Glendale Unified District s overall graduation rate at 89.7 percent, according to the California Department of Education. In comparison, Glendale Unified District had a graduation rate of 89 percent for the 2017-2018 school year. According to CDE data, graduation rates continue to indicate an increase in disproportional academic performance between white, Black, Latino, and English learner students. According to the National Centre for Education Statistics, in the 2017-2018 school year, of the 50 states where data was collected, students with disabilities were at the bottom of 4-year high school graduation rates by student group. Briana is a special education student at Desert Hot Springs High School. Briana s brother is currently taking care of her and her other siblings.
