Mental competency hearing delayed for man accused of attacking 7-year-old
A hearing to set a date for the mental competency trial of a man accused of severely injuring a 7-year-old Desert Hot Springs boy in a random attack was rescheduled today to March 24 at the request of the defense.
Daniel Birch Poulsen, 33, was arrested last July after allegedly attacking Gavin Ludwick in the middle of the street in the 9600 block of Vista Del Valle, fracturing the boy s skull and rendering him unconscious.
At the request of the prosecution, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Harold Hopp previously ordered a jury trial to determine whether Poulsen is mentally fit to be prosecuted on one count each of attempted murder and willful child cruelty, along with two sentence-enhancing allegations of inflicting great bodily injury.

Desert Hot Springs Police investigate weekend homicide
The Desert Hot Springs Police Department confirmed they are investigating the death of a woman over the weekend as a homicide.
A 39-year-old woman was found dead inside her home along the 15600 Block of Palm Drive on Sunday at approximately 1:30 p.m. Officers were originally called to the home for a check the welfare call.
There are no other details on the homicide at this time, police ask that anyone with additional information contact Det Kupka at (760) 329-2904 ext. 354 or Sgt Weigle at (760) 329-2904 ext. 285.
This homicide marks the city s sixth homicide of the year and the valley s 34th.
Person found dead inside Desert Hot Springs apartment following fire
A person was found dead following an apartment fire in Desert Hot Springs Monday afternoon.
Cal Fire was initially called to the Casa West Apartments on Cholla Drive at around 1:50 p.m. to respond to an apartment complex. However, a spokesperson later confirmed that the incident turned out to be some kind of medical issue.
After making contact with the Desert Hot Springs Police Department, firefighters found signs of a previously unreported fire that was extinguished inside. They also found a person who had died at the scene

22-year-old arrested in connection with 2017 Desert Hot Springs murder
The Desert Hot Springs Police Department arrested a suspect on Tuesday in connection with a 2017 murder in the city.
Not much information was available about the arrest on Tuesday, however, police confirmed it was related to the murder of Emmanuel Jenkins, 35, who was killed on June 15, 2017, in the area of Cactus Drive and Pierson Boulevard.
Jenkins body was found dead in front of a restaurant in the early morning, but police did not reveal what he died of. Police did confirm they were investigating the death as a homicide.
The suspect, a 22-year-old, was arrested for first-degree murder but has not been offiically charged by the Riverside County District Attorney s office as of this writing.
