BLOOMINGTON, Minn. Back-to-school pictures aren t typically taken in January.
But that s what Anita Smithson found herself doing Tuesday morning as she snapped a photo of her eight-year-old son and six-year-old daughter outside their Bloomington elementary school on their first day back to in-person learning in months. You can just barely see their eyes with their winter hats and their masks, Smithson said.
Bloomington Public Schools began allowing pre-k through 2nd grade students back in the building Tuesday. Students in grades three through five will join them beginning February 1.

The St. Paul school board failed to give its blessing Tuesday night to nearly $153,000 in wage and benefit increases for many of the district s highest-paid employees.
A late-night vote ended in a 3-to-3 tie, with a board member absent, leaving Superintendent Joe Gothard to say he will consult with the district s human resources director and board Chairwoman Jeanelle Foster to determine his next steps.
Foster joined Zuki Ellis and Jessica Kopp in supporting the increases, while John Brodrick, Jim Vue and Chauntyll Allen voted against. Allen raised concerns about how the high-priced superintendency group was being treated in comparison with low-paid paraprofessionals who work directly with students.

On Monday, Gov. Tim Walz announced teachers and school staff, childcare workers and those who are 65 years old and up will be able to get the COVID-19 vaccine. It will be made available through a pilot program.
The decision comes a month after the Governor announced elementary schools across the state will be allowed to go back to in-person learning on Jan. 18.
Teachers who work for St. Paul Public Schools are pushing back against the decision, urging the district to delay until more educators and staff can be vaccinated.
“I think there s a lot of fear and uncertainty,” said Jeff Garcia, a sixth grade special education teacher.
