Farmer Writes: slow regrowths and issues with milk buyers

Joe Collingborn is a dairy farmer in England. There is an old Wiltshire saying - “When the wind is in the northeast on 21 March, he will stay there until 21 June.” No grass will grow in these low temperatures and drying winds. It is usually accompanied by a blackthorn winter, when the hedges are decked with prolific blackthorn blossom. This is what we are experiencing at the moment and although cows are on their second rotation of the paddocks, regrowth is very slow and we have to buffer feed. Most of this is being bought in and judging by the price rise, there must be a lot of people in the same boat as me.

Obituary: Robin Morrow 1931-2021

The Irish Farmers Journal lost a close friend when Robin Morrow passed away on Thursday morning, 1 April, after a brief illness. WR Morrow was a man with a huge passion for agriculture, agribusiness and farming politics. He was a born leader, always prepared to state his views and debate the consequences. But while he might disagree strongly, he could agree to differ. He did not bear grudges and was quick to move on with the task in hand. Having served as a club leader and president of the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster, Robin moved on to leadership positions across the spectrum of farm organisations in Northern Ireland. Probably the most challenging was during the deregulation of milk marketing in the 1990s.
