Ag Briefs: WI still top cheese producer Wisconsin State Farmer WI still top cheese producer Wisconsin still leads the pack in cheese production according to the most recent Wisconsin Dairy Products Production report from the USDA that tracks cheese production for Wisconsin and other select states between Jan. 2020 and Jan. 2021. During this time period, Wisconsin s production of cheddar was up 4%, ranking the state in the top position. Production of mozzarella, however, was down 4.3% - with the decline likely attributed to the slow down of food service purchases during the pandemic. Production of Italian cheeses also fell 3.5 % in the past year. Overall, Wisconsin s total cheese production was up 0.3%.

Survey Shows Ways to Make Dairy Farms Resilient During Pandemic

Pennsylvania dairies are largely weathering the pandemic, but a new report finds that farmers could improve their ability to cope with drastic events. “The key question here is how do we help Pennsylvania farmers to become more resilient,” said Veronica Villena, the Penn State professor of supply chain and information systems who conducted the study for the Center for Dairy Excellence. It’s clear from the survey that the pandemic has taken a toll on farms. Out of 700 farms that responded to a survey last summer, 60 said they had dumped milk between March and May, when the pandemic disrupted supply chains.

By Elliott Dennis, Assistant Professor & Livestock Extension Economist, Department of Agricultural Economics, University of Nebraska – Lincoln Changes to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Risk Management Agency (RMA) Livestock Risk Protection (LRP) insurance plan took effect on January 20, 2021, for the crop year 2021 and succeeding crop years. These changes included: (a) increasing livestock head limits for feeder and fed cattle to 6,000 head per endorsement/12,000 head annually and swine to 40,000 head per endorsement/150,000 head annually; (b) modifying the requirement to own insured livestock until the last 60 days of the endorsement; (c) increasing the endorsement lengths for swine up to 52 weeks; and, (d) creating new feeder cattle and swine types to allow for unborn livestock to be insured. FSA quickly implemented crucial programs amid challenging year Purkey SIDNEY USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) helped farmers, livestock producers and foresters weather a tough 2020, marked with a pandemic and natural disasters. During the COVID-19 pandemic, FSA continued to deliver farm programs to producers through phone and online tools, using social distancing guidelines. The agency also provided extra flexibilities to its programs, adjusting reporting dates and loan processing timelines, and continued to expand technology and streamline services to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. “Shelby County has over of 200,000 cropland acres with the top three commodities being soybeans, corn and wheat. We serve over 3,000 farm operators and owners,” said Annette Purkey, the Shelby County executive director (CED) for the Farm Service Agency (FSA). She also serves as the Acting CED for the Miami County FSA office.
