Two former mayoral candidates from both sides of the aisle are teaming up to get legislation passed to help lure full-service grocery stores to Baltimore s healthy food priority areas.A push to entice grocers to the city by allowing them to sell beer and wine failed this legislative session. Getting grocery stores to open in certain Baltimore City neighborhoods is a challenge, but supporters haven t given up hope.In Baltimore s Upton neighborhood, there are plenty of convenience stores that sell beer and liquor with a few fresh food items mixed in. Maryland is only one of four states in the country that doesn t allow grocery stores and supermarkets to sell beer, and we think it s time for that exemption to be made for grocery stores and supermarkets in our most disinvested neighborhoods and our food deserts.
