CRUDEN, Gordon Neil: 12.04.1933 – 28.01.2021 Former Palmerston North city councillor Gordon Cruden has been remembered as a man with a formal demeanour and sharp mind and also, a great sense of humour. Cruden had two stints on the city council, from 1967 to1971, and again from 2001 to 2010. He contested the Palmerston North seat for Parliament as the National candidate in 1967 and 1969, coming close to unseating Labour MP Joe Walding on his second attempt. Having practised as a lawyer in Palmerston North since 1958, Cruden moved to Hong Kong in 1973, where he was a judge for more than 20 years. Former mayor Jono Naylor remembers working closely with Cruden after his return to his home city during the 2000s.
It gave Marist a lead of 60 after they scored 148 in their first innings in what had seemed like a low score. Liam Gunning top scored for Marist with 49, but Freyberg seamers Brad Fulton and Akhter pegged Marist back with 4-17 and 3-34, respectively. In Marist’s second innings they finished the day at 37-0 with a lead of 97.

CRICKET: United pulled the twenty20 final back from the brink to beat Freyberg and claim their fifth title in a row. United won the final by eight runs at Fitzherbert Park on Saturday, but had almost no right to do so after it looked like Freyberg were cruising home. United were unbeaten in the twenty20 competition. Batting first, United scored 135-7 and then Freyberg were 115-2 with 3.2 overs to go. But they lost two set batsmen and United put the heat on at the death, holding Freyberg to 127-5.
Seven Men Whose Wives are Making Waves
Stanford Professor and Nobel Laureate, Alvin Roth, in a research work titled
Deferred Acceptance Algorithms, posits that, regardless of how successful any of the partners is in marriage, both spouses are likely to be happy if they understand contentment. The Roth’s rule is still largely valid especially for men who feel insecure around successful women.
Professor Roth’s rule has been strengthened by Anna. N: et al (2015) through their research titled, “An Examination of How Husbands, As Key Stakeholders, Impact the Success of Women Entrepreneurs” in the
Journal of Small Business and Enterprise Development. They conclude in their research that husbands’ support for their wives increases the chances of the women becoming successful women entrepreneurs and business leaders. Here are seven men whose wives are making waves globally and who credit much of their success to the support received from their husbands.
There is one more week of the twenty20 competition remaining.
CRICKET: Marist batsman Craig Lawrence put in the Manawatū club performance of the weekend, smashing a century in their 57-run win over Old Boys in the twenty20 competition. Lawrence raced to 100 not out from 56 balls, hitting eight fours and five sixes as Marist piled on 194-4 batting first at Ongley Park in Sunday. The win put Marist into fourth place with one round of matches remaining this weekend, but they are out of the running. There is one round at 12pm on Saturday, with the final at 3.30pm. Unbeaten United still lead the competition and have already qualified for the final. Freyberg are second and Palmerston North Boys High School are third, and they play each other in the final round in a virtual semifinal.
