Two people have been rushed to hospital after a car rolled on Waitārere Beach. Emergency services were alerted to the single-car crash on the beach, 56 kilometres southwest of Palmerston North, just before 10pm on Wednesday. A police spokeswoman said the car rolled on the beach and a helicopter was called for medical assistance, but weather conditions prevented it from reaching the site. The two people, one with critical injuries and the other with moderate injuries, were driven from Windsor St next to the beach to Palmerston North Hospital, a St John spokeswoman said.
Witness Dave Bayliss told
Stuff the motorcyclist took off “like a rocket” shortly before the crash. In court, defence lawyer William Kronast, appearing on behalf of Zhuang’s lawyer Tony Thackery, said an independent expert was working on a report about the crash. They would need time to meet with police’s expert to work through any disputes or issues. Zhuang will have a judge-alone trial if he maintains his not guilty plea, due to the charge carrying a maximum sentence of three months’ imprisonment – too low for a jury trial. He will next appear in March for an administrative hearing.

Jake Baker, photographed in Palmerston North in January, will race his superstock throughout New Zealand to help with his fundraising drive. “She’s really well. She’s participating in ballet and swimming and she, with her sister Amelia, were in the DanceWorks Regent production a couple of weeks ago,” Jake said. Evalina’s clean bill of health has let Jake return to racing superstocks after a couple of seasons off. He has more than podium places on his mind and is determined to meet a goal he set more than four years ago of raising $50,000 for the Child Cancer Foundation.
He was removed from his car and taken to Palmerston North Hospital in a serious condition. Acting Detective Senior Sergeant Dave Thompson said the woman who was in the hijacked car handled herself well and Victim Support was helping her, but repercussions were ongoing. Her vehicle was damaged beyond repair and not insured, he said.
