Albert is no stranger to the courts, amassing 140 previous convictions. His most serious was an attempted murder rap for his involvement in the 2001 shooting of Brendon Nuku in Levin. Nuku, Albert and two other offenders, Shaun Hartley and Barry Gardiner, all had some involvement in the Horowhenua underworld at the time. Evidence presented at trial, after which Albert, Hartley and Gardiner were found guilty, involved repeated mentions of a $10,000 fee for killing Nuku.
