An argument (and podcast) for reviving passenger rail in Colorado ski country

In doing some research for my appearance on Forrest Whitman’s On The Rail’s podcast on KHEN 106.9 FM radio in Salida, Colorado, I realized that I first started seriously writing about passenger rail service into the Colorado mountains back in the mid-aughts but that my true connection to trains, mountains, skiing and water runs much deeper.
I’ll dive into all of the history in a moment, but first some breaking news on the Tennessee Pass Line lease exemption filing by Colorado Midland Pacific Railroad. In a letter to the U.S. Surface Transportation Board (STB) on Monday, March 15, a Washington, D.C. attorney wrote that “erroneous” opposition to the passenger proposal based on speculation about crude oil transport had prompted an amendment request.

Requirements for safety-relevant Human Machine Interfaces (HMIs) for train operators are becoming more common around the world. The evolution toward safety-relevant HMIs for train control is already well under way in Europe and Asia, most notably as part of the widespread adoption of the European Train Control System (ETCS), with more than 50,000 miles of the worldwide rail network equipped or contracted to be equipped with ETCS (8). While HMI safety requirements have not yet become widespread in North American rail applications, the anticipated re-emergence of HMI safety requirements could soon be an example of history repeating itself.

Beginning March 1 and continuing until May 2, the MBTA will stop running commuter trains from Littleton to Alewife.
This is to install a Positive Train Control (PTC) system. The MBTA is replacing the service with Yankee Line shuttle buses.
Shuttles will run all day, Mondays through Fridays. There is currently no weekend service on the Fitchburg Line.
Shuttles will not serve North Station or Porter but will instead depart from and arrive at Alewife.
Each scheduled train will be replaced by both a local shuttle and an express shuttle:
Local shuttles make all stops between Alewife and Littleton, except Hastings and Silver Hill.
