PHNOM PENH (Xinhua): Cambodia suspended sending labourers to neighbouring Thailand on Monday (Dec 21) after the latter reported a surge in Covid-19 infections in its Samut Sakhon province, some 300km away from the border.
In a statement issued to private recruitment agencies and relevant officials, Cambodia s Labour Minister Ith Samheng said, Sending MoU-based and seasonal labourers to Thailand must be temporarily suspended from now on until further notice.
He also urged the recruitment companies to work closely with Thai employers or employers association and authorities to provide help to Cambodian migrant workers in Thailand when necessary.
Thailand is the largest market for Cambodian workers. The Labour Ministry s data showed an estimated 1.1 million Cambodian labourers have been working in Thailand.

The Cambodian government on December 20 asked local authorities to tighten safety measures along the border with Thailand. The country, which shares a 462-kilometre border with Cambodia, recently witnessed a surge in coronavirus cases in Samut Sakhon province. Fearing that the airborne infection could spread to Cambodia as well, authorities have now stepped up security measures in the border area.
“The authorities along Cambodia’s provincial border with Thailand must be on high alert and must check for all incoming travellers thoroughly, screening their body’s temperature and requiring them to fill health declaration forms,” Cambodian health minister Mam Bunheng was quoted as saying by ANI.

Samut Sakhon is located about 300 km away from Cambodia s border. The authorities along Cambodia s provincial border with Thailand must be on high alert and must check health for all incoming travellers thoroughly, screening their body s temperatures and requiring them to fill in health declaration forms, Cambodian Health Minister Mam Bunheng said in a statement.
