Military personnel from Texas, other countries to compete in Bastrop

Egypt was added for this year’s competition. “We’re grateful for Camp Swift to host this (event) and for the county to support it,” said Bastrop County Judge Paul Pape. “(It’s) becoming quite an international event.” In the past, the Best Warrior Competition has included a road march, an obstacle course, the use of combat arms, a land navigation exercise, activities to demonstrate proficiency in various warrior tasks, writing an essay and appearing before a board that reviews personal appearance, military bearing and knowledge. These events test the tactical and technical expertise of the competing military personnel through a scoring system, and past competitions have also included a “mystery event” announced the day of the competition.

Bastrop County recovery team marks 10 years since massive Complex Fire

As the 10-year anniversary of the Bastrop County Complex Fire approaches this fall, the county’s long term recovery team has announced its plans to memorialize the fire and the lingering effects of it, both positive and negative. Sheila Lowe, the executive director of the Bastrop County Long Term Recovery Team, told the Bastrop County Commissioners Court on Monday that programming will include community events, a golf tournament and a special magazine highlighting the stories of heroes and survivors from the fire. “Because (the) Bastrop County Long Term Recovery Team was born out of that historic event, we thought that it’d be only fitting that we lead in the commemoration of it,” Lowe told the court.

Disaster declared after destructive, historic winter storm

Yet another state of disaster has been declared for Bastrop County, this time after several inches of snow and several days of continuous below-freezing temperatures crippled Texas’ electric grid and water systems last week. On Monday afternoon, February 15, County Judge Paul Pape signed an emergency declaration of disaster due to severe winter weather. Under state law, such a disaster declaration must be ratified by the commissioners’ court within seven days or be discontinued. The item was on the agenda for Monday’s regular meeting of the Bastrop County Commissioners Court. “Little did we know at the time that it would not get better,” Pape said at this Monday’s meeting. “it would get worse before it got better, and pretty much shut the entire county down.”
