April 28 has been designated the Day of Mourning across Canada. This day honours the memory of those workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness as a result of workplace incidents.
The Day of Mourning was first recognized by the Canadian Labour Congress in 1984, and was designated a national day of observance with the passing of the Workers Mourning Act in 1991. It was on April 28, 1991 the federal government officially proclaimed the dare as a national Day of Mourning.
Acknowledgement of this day is now observed by many countries throughout the world, but Canada was the first nation to honour their lost workers in this way. Across the country, people may show their respect in various ways, such as holding moments of silence, wearing ribbons or lighting candles. The Canadian flag on Parliament Hill is typically flown at half-mast on April 28.

“I was disappointed that the federal government chose not to do that and we’re going to encourage them to move forward on that,” she told reporters. “It is the best way to go. It is the most efficient way to go.”
The buck-passing probably has to do with the undisclosed cost of paid sick leave. Plus a reluctance by politicians to pick up the tab themselves or pass the bill along to pandemic-battered employers.
Another surprise in the B.C. NDP budget was funding for child care, which fell well short of the party commitment in its election platform.
The harmonized sales tax is a “lose-lose” situation, says B.C. Federation of Labour president Jim Sinclair.
He urged about 75 delegates at a federation conference in Prince George Friday to vote against the HST.
“They haven’t fixed a thing, they made it worse,” Sinclair said of the government’s move to reduce the HST from 12 per cent to 10 per cent over the next three years.
“If (Premier Christy Clark) drops the rate, she loses $1.8 billion out of the money we have to pay for schools and hospitals,” he said, echoing comments Clark made when running for the Liberal leadership and fellow contender Kevin Falcon suggested dropping the rate.
