PICKENS COUNTY, Ga. - The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has been asked to look into the deadly deputy-involved shooting in Pickens County.
It happened Monday afternoon around 2:30 p.m. at a home along Dianne Street. The GBI said deputies with the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office responded to a 911 call asking for a welfare check on a man reportedly having suicidal thoughts.
Chris Childers, 46, of Jasper, was armed with a weapon when deputies arrived, the GBI said. Deputies ordered the man to put down the gun, which he did, but the GBI said he picked it back up again. That’s when a deputy shot him.

Jasper, Georgia (February 9, 2021) – On Monday, February 8, 2021, at approximately 2:45 p.m., the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested by the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office to conduct an officer involved shooting investigation.
The investigation indicates that at approximately 2:30 p.m., the Pickens County 911 Center received a request for a welfare check on a man that was expressing suicidal thoughts at a residence on Dianne Street. The man was reportedly armed with a replica gun and expressed a desire to die at the hands of law enforcement. The man was identified as Chris Childers, 46, of Jasper, Georgia.

JASPER, Ga. – Pickens County has released the charges against a Gilmer County Sheriff’s Deputy after he was arrested last night, January 31, 2021.

According to the Pickens County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded to a call regarding domestic violence at approximately 10:16 p.m. on January 31, 2021. Authorities are not releasing additional details about the incident itself at this time.
However, the report did say that they arrested an off-duty Gilmer Sheriff’s Office deputy. Named in the report as Jason Lynn Newman, 34. The Pickens Sheriff’s Office stated that Gordon County Sheriff’s Office located Newman around 1 a.m. before Pickens County took him into custody where he is currently being held at the Pickens Sheriff’s Office Adult Detention Center.
