Oscars 2021: Bay Area well represented at 93rd Academy Awards
A number of Bay Area nominees went home with an Oscar tonight.
Vallejo singer-songwriter H.E.R. won for Judas and the Black Messiah in the Best Original Song category with Fight for You.
Emeryville-based Pixar Animation Studios earned two Oscars for Soul which included Oakland native Daveed Diggs in its voice cast. The movie won in the Best Animated Film category and Best Original Score (Trent Reznor, Atticus Ross, and Jon Batiste). Soul was also up for Best Sound, which went to Sound of Metal.
Another Pixar film Burrow was nominated in the Short Animated Film category, but that award went to If Anything Happens I Love You.

KingstOOn Virtual Event Sees Submissions Increase

KingstOOn has hosted its first-ever virtual event with over 3,500 registered participants and festival submissions increasing from 300 received in 2013 to 2,100 from 105 countries this year.
During the opening ceremony, Prime Minister of Jamaica Andrew Holness commended the organizers of the event and noted that the animation industry is an increasingly growing sector of employment for young Jamaicans.
“Youth unemployment in Jamaica has declined over the period 2014–2020 from 34 percent to 23 percent. This is significant; and this can, in part, be attributed to the increased numbers of youth trained and now employed in the digitization and animation industries,” he said.

Awards contenders including Mank, Nomadland and The Trial of the Chicago 7 are available to watch before the 93rd annual Academy Awards on Sunday.
While the nominees for the 93rd annual Academy Awards were unveiled a month ago and the event is coming up on Sunday, there is still time to see some major titles you may have missed.
