As the sun set outside the Broome County office building in downtown Binghamton, 35-year-old Salka Valerio recalled feeling conflicting emotions when she heard the news from Minnesota. I was happy and so sad at the same time, Valerio said. Because it took many Black people to die without justice for this to happen. I feel like the demonstrations that we did and the movement that we got pushed for this to happen.
Valerio, who is a Binghamton resident and member of the local Black Lives Matter movement, said the verdict is a step in the right direction, but there is still police reform work to be done.
BU Director of Athletics Patrick Elliott Is Stepping Down
Patrick Elliott, Binghamton University Director of Athletics will be leaving his position at the end of June after nine years of service.
According to a message from Binghamton University President Harvey Stenger, Elliott has decided to leave the position to send more time with his sons.

Stenger said in his message, when we hired Pat, he was charged with guiding Binghamton Athletics into the school’s second decade of NCAA Division I membership, while ensuring our coaches and student-athletes have the resources they need to be successful, not just as athletes but, more importantly, as students and citizens of the University community.
Major COVID-related changes in place at Binghamton University

In an email distributed Monday to students, faculty and staff, university officials made known:
“Binghamton University’s COVID-19 positivity rate reached 2.4% on a rolling 14-day average. To help reverse this upward trend and to avoid reaching the threshold where we will be required to move to fully remote learning, the following cancellations are effective Tues., Feb. 23 and until further notice:
All intercollegiate athletics, club sports and intramurals.
All non-classroom student activities, including Greek life.
All student group dance rehearsals and other non-academic student activities.
All performances of any kind.
