Democratic senators urge Biden to include health care in economic plan

ADVERTISEMENT Medicare has been one of the most successful and popular federal programs in our nation s history since it was signed into law by President Lyndon Johnson in 1965. Now, 55 years later, the time is long overdue for us to expand and improve this program so that millions of older Americans can receive the health care they need, including eyeglasses, hearing aids and dental care,  the letter read, according to CNN. The second phase of the economic recovery plan, set to be unveiled by Biden this week, also includes a proposal to increase taxes on the rich to pay for education and child care.

Federal funding is a poor plan to improve infrastructure

For infrastructure to be sustainable, it ought to be paid for by its users. The tens of thousands of cell phone towers and connecting infrastructure are largely paid for by subscribers. Water and sewer systems are funded through water and sewer bills. Electricity lines are funded by utility bills. Financing an item with funds paid by its users creates an important link. It ensures that the costs to build and maintain the infrastructure are borne by its users. This encourages infrastructure to be built where people are going to use it and discourages it from being put where people are not going to use it.
