Tax hike goes to voters: Pittsylvania County approves 1% sales tax referendum

CHATHAM, Va. — Pittsylvania County voters this November get to decide if the county s sales tax rate will increase by 1 percent, based on a resolution that the Pittsylvania County Board of Supervisors unanimously passed at its monthly business meeting yesterday night. The resolution supports a 1 percent local tax referendum for renovation and necessary maintenance of Pittsylvania County s public schools, as well as a generator of funds to pay off the existing loans and bonds that are outstanding for the construction of eight county schools. Chatham High School, Chatham Middle School, Gretna High School, Gretna Middle School, Tunstall High School, Tunstall Middle School, Dan River High School and Dan River Middle School were all constructed between 2000 and 2010 and require debt payback by the year 2051. Pittsylvania County supervisors anticipate that, if passed, the revenue from this new tax will cover the construction debt—which stands at $45 million—and then some.
