For 35 years, Tom Allen, owner of Dean s 1/2 Price Books in Topeka, has been the sole keeper of the second-hand bookstore at 1426 S. Kansas Ave.
But the store s history goes back even further, as Dean s has operated in the area for nearly five decades.
According to Allen, his father, who was named Dean, started the used bookstore in 1973. His father had owned a new bookstore in Lawrence since the early 1960s and was looking for a way to sell some of the leftover inventory that had built up over the years. He happened to go to Kansas City and checked out a used bookstore to see if they d be interested in (the inventory), Allen said. He kind of became friends with the owner of the store who said, You ought to open a used bookstore.

Dr. Dan Kinney, president of Iowa Western Community College, will soon pass the torch to the next generation â of his own family.
He will officially retire on Dec. 31, and his son, Dr. Daniel Kinney, will take over on Jan. 4.
The younger Kinney is president of Iowa Central Community College in Fort Dodge and has led that institution since 2009.
He knows he has big shoes to fill.
The elder Kinney has dramatically expanded and improved the collegeâs facilities during his 26-year tenure. Two dozen facilities have been built or purchased, enrollment has increased and new athletic teams have been created. He oversaw construction of the Arts Center, which was dedicated in 2001.
