Eight minutes changed the course of 2020. It was Memorial Day. May 25. George Floyd was being arrested by Minneapolis police outside of a grocery store after authorities received a 911 call that someone paid with a counterfeit bill. The caller told authorities the man was acting erratically. Floyd, who is Black, matched the caller’s description of the suspect. Minneapolis police officers responded and handcuffed Floyd. Shortly thereafter, Officer Derek Chauvin, who is white, was caught on camera kneeling on Floyd’s neck on the curb of the city street. Floyd pleaded with Chauvin, gasping that he couldn’t breathe. He became unresponsive and later died at a nearby medical center.

Police Chief Candidates Say Communities Will Be Key In How They Run Department

The seven finalists competing to become Dallas next police chief come both from within the city s ranks and as far away as California and Virginia, but they were singing from the same hymnal this week as the public got its first chance to check them out. Call it bless our communities. They made pitches for the job Wednesday during a livestreamed forum open to the public online. Public Sector Search and Consulting, an executive talent recruitment firm, winnowed dozens of applications to arrive at the seven, who spent part of the week being interviewed by community members and city leaders. The final decision on who will replace outgoing Chief U. Renee Hall belongs to City Manager T.C. Broadnax, who expects to make a selection by the end of the month, according to KERA.

Reporter who taped Black Lives Matter protest destruction fights to sue Pittsburgh PD

Shutterstock PITTSBURGH – A Pittsburgh property owner and reporter who recorded footage of a violent protest after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, and whose identity was later disclosed, disagrees with the Pittsburgh Police Department that state law precludes her lawsuit’s claims of liability against it. Ashley Zoe Fox of Pittsburgh initially filed suit in the Allegheny County Court of Common Pleas on Oct. 26 versus the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, also of Pittsburgh. “The plaintiff was filming the protest that occurred on May 30, 2020. During that protest, the plaintiff captured video footage that was submitted to the defendant for use in the prosecution of individuals shown damaging the defendant’s property. Plaintiff was assured by Det. Frank Rosato and Det. John Baker, who both work for the defendant, that the submitted evidence would remain completely anonymous,” the suit said.
