Deputies investigate drowning after golfer goes missing in East Lake Woodlands

OLDSMAR — Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputies are investigating the drowning of a 74-year-old Lutz man found dead in a pond Feb. 28 near the East Lake Woodlands County Club. Deputies responded to the East Lake Woodlands subdivision in Oldsmar on a report of a missing man. Investigators say Hermilo Jazmines and a friend were playing golf at the East Lake Woodlands Country Club. Jazmines teed off at hole number three about 7:37 a.m. and was last seen looking for his ball near the green. Jazmines’ golf cart was parked on the cart path and his putter was found lying on the ground near the water.

Funeral services announced for Pinellas County Deputy Michael Magli

Deputy Michael James Magli’s funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 23, at Idlewild Baptist Church, 18333 Exciting Idlewild Blvd. in Lutz. Born in Ozone Park, New York, Deputy Magli came to the Tampa Bay area in 1994. Initially hired as a part-time Criminal Justice Specialist, Deputy Magli transferred to a deputy recruit position and was assigned to the Patrol Operations Bureau in 2014. He served eight years with the Pinellas County Sheriff s Office. On Wednesday Feb. 17, 2021, Deputy Magli lost his life in the line of duty. He leaves behind his wife, Stephanie, and two young daughters. His name will be added to memorials for Pinellas County Law Enforcement and the Florida Sheriffs Association.

This will be effective from sunrise to sunset, Tuesday, Feb. 23. Deputy Michael Magli was killed in the line of duty on Feb. 17 as a result of a vehicle crash. Magli served the community for over seven years in the Pinellas County Sheriff’s office.

Suspect charged with felony murder in death of Pinellas County deputy

A Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputy died Feb. 17 while doing his job and trying to keep people from getting hurt, according to Sheriff Bob Gualtieri. Deputy Michael J. Magli, 30, died at the scene of a crash on East Lake Road about 4:34 p.m. He was in the process of deploying “stop sticks,” used to delate tires, in hopes of stopping a suspect that had been driving a high speeds in a reckless manner. The driver lost control of his vehicle and collided with Deputy Magli’s cruiser parked in the median. Magli was standing outside the cruise and ended up pinned beneath it. He died at the scene.

TARPON SPRINGS — A Pinellas County Sheriff’s deputy died at the scene of a crash Feb. 17 after a suspect struck him on East Lake Road near Forelock Road. Deputies responded to that intersection about 4:25 p.m. in unincorporated Tarpon Springs. Detectives say Robert Allen Holzaepfel. 33, a transient was passed out behind the wheel of a 2002 Ford F150 stopped at a red light. Rescue workers were first on scene and they broke out a window to gain access to the man. Detectives say Holzaepfel fled the scene traveling north on East Lake Road. He continued to drive recklessly, traveling east on Keystone Road continuing to evade deputies.
