After issuing a proverbial call to arms last May, a new community group committed to improving conditions within the region’s long-term care homes is continuing to share their concerns that many senior residents living within those facilities are not being treated with respect and dignity.
Local residents Bonnie Roe and Mike Perry launched the Long-Term Care Coalition after hearing horror stories from friends and family who have loved ones presently living in nursing homes and retirement facilities.
Together, the pair rallied a small group of community activists, who have spent the past eight months lobbying for drastic systemic change to the long-term care system.

The first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have arrived as of yesterday – The Haliburton, Kawartha, Pine Ridge (HKPR) District Health Unit is now rolling out its plan to start vaccinating residents of the area’s long-term care homes this week.
The health unit has received 700 doses of the Moderna vaccine and may receive more next week.
The province announced yesterday that it has revised its goal and is aiming to have all residents of long-term care and retirement homes vaccinated by Feb. 5.
Dr. Ian Gemmill, our local Acting Medical Officer of Health said in a release, “This is the day we have been waiting for.”

LONG SAULT – A Lancaster long term care home is dealing with a “horrible” situation where all but seven of its residents have tested positive for COVID-19.

Daniel Gabriel, age 66, of Merrill, died on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Pine Crest Nursing Home, after a long battle with MS. He was under the care of the staff at Pine Crest Nursing Home and Aspirus Comfort Care & Hospice Services. Dan was born on July 27, 1954 to the late Clarence and Magdeline (Dallman) Gabriel in Antigo, WI. He attended and graduated from Antigo High School and received his degree in Pharmacy at UW-Madison. The Eastern Ontario Health Unit reported an increase of 58 confirmed COVID-19 cases on Monday, an average of just over 14 cases a day since Christmas Eve.
The EOHU’s afternoon update showed Cornwall leading the increase with 16 new cases, with 11 new cases in Clarence-Rockland, one in Alfred & Plantagenet, two in Champlain, three in Hawkesbury, four in The Nation, one in Casselman, eight in Russell, one in North Dundas, three in South Dundas, one in South Stormont, four in North Glengarry, and three in South Glengarry.
