Witnesses sought in 2018 killing of 20-year-old man on Birmingham’s Valley Avenue

Kijuan Harrell died June 23, 2018 in a shooting that happened about 1:15 a.m. Saturday on Valley Avenue.

It’s been nearly three years since a 20-year-old Jefferson County man was fatally shot on Birmingham’s Valley Avenue and Birmingham police again are asking for the pubic to come forward with any information that could bring justice in his slaying.
Kijuan Harrell, who graduated from Pinson Valley High School with an advanced diploma, died June 23, 2018. The shooting happened about 1:15 a.m. that Saturday.
Birmingham police said Harrell was shot while in a vehicle. After the shooting, the vehicle ended up in a parking spot at the far west end of Fox Valley Apartments. Harrell was taken to UAB Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 2:13 a.m. Another male was in the vehicle at the time of the shooting but was not injured.

PINSON The old saying goes, “Never forget where you came from.” For two young women who grew up in the Rusk Mobile Home Park, it is apparent they have not forgotten the community that built them. Now, they are helping the community rebuild after a tornado destroyed homes in the park.
Kasey Cupido, a senior at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, came back to the park to give back. Cupido is majoring in criminal justice and minoring in accounting, but on Wednesday, Jan. 27, she put her studies on hold to count donations.
“Right now, we have a lot of food so that’s great. People are getting fed,” said Cupido. “We have clothing items but at this point, a lot of things that we need are a lot of working hands and materials to rebuild.”

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) - The Virginia Tech football team has voted to decline any potential bowl bids this year, which ends the Hokiesâ postseason streak at 27 consecutive bowls.
Techâs run of success from 1993-2019 was the longest-active bowl streak in the nation, and the fourth-longest all-time.
âI think it speaks to the difficulty of the season that theyâve been through,â says Fuente. âThere were players that wanted to play. They were passionate about that. But we were going to do this all-together, or not. This was ultimately about our kids, and I think theyâve sacrificed enough.â
