The National Museum of Women in the Arts in Washington, DC Thomas H. Field
The National Museum of Women in the Arts (NMWA) in Washington, DC announced today that it would close for around two years beginning in August for a $66m renovation of its 1908 Classical Revival building.
The project, for which $50m has been raised so far through a capital campaign, will include creating a new orientation gallery in the building’s great hall to acclimate visitors and tell stories about women artists; enlarging galleries for both historic and contemporary works; creating a library, research centre, reading room and a studio; improving wireless and touch-screen technology in galleries; and upgrading infrastructure and storage to enhance the conservation and security of the museum’s collection. The roof, cornice and exterior of the building, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, will also be restored while heeding local preservation

Hauser & Wirth’s First Global CEO Ewan Venters on His Role and the Gallery’s Sustainable Agenda Share
Earlier this year, Scottish businessman Ewan Venters was named first global Chief Executive Officer of famed international gallery Hauser & Wirth. Venters, whose career spans over 30 years and who was previously Fortnum & Mason’s CEO, is a personal friend of the gallery’s co-founders Iwan and Manuela Wirth.
Since his appointment, Venters has contributed to the gallery’s digital expansion and implemented some strategies that reflect his experience in the luxury retail sector. One of his top priorities, he tells us, is sustainability.
The Smoker (ca. 1635) is thought to be a self portrait.
On March 31, 2021, embattled governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation legalizing recreational cannabis use, making New York the 15th state to take the momentous step toward mainstream marijuana consumption. It’s no secret in the art world that partaking in pot-smoking is not only a recreational activity, but a legitimate commercial past time. Richard Prince launched his own line of bud in 2019 called “Katz & Dogg,” and a sneaky art gallery in Washington DC managed to thwart local laws by gifting gallery-goers weed with every artwork purchase (it should be noted that the paintings were made by a four-year-old Alaskan Klee Kai dog named Sudo).
