Martin Knowles, principal of Essa Academy, is in the running for this year s prestigious Pearson s National Secondary School Headteacher of the Year. Known as the Oscars of the teaching profession, the Pearson National Teaching Awards are an annual celebration of excellence in education, recognising the amazing work of teachers across the UK. Scores of those in teaching profession are nominated but only a few are shortlisted. Martin Knowles Mr Knowles has been head of the Great Lever based school for nearly four years, and under his leadership the school is now in the top 20 per cent nationally for pupil progress and is oversubscribed.

Alne School joins Outwood Grange Academy Trust

Outwood Primary Academy Alne, formerly Alne Primary School, has become part of the Outwood Grange Academies Trust. The primary academy was rated as Inadequate by Ofsted following an inspection in July 2019, and subsequently Outwood was named as the preferred sponsor. Outwood had been working with the school prior to its conversion, to ensure a smooth transition. Head Michelle Dawson will remain as principal of the new academy. She said: “We are looking forward to joining the Outwood Family and this is an exciting time for Alne. Outwood has great experience in North Yorkshire of not only transforming schools, but also playing an active role in the communities they serve.

COVID-19 ‘Lockdown Hero’ accolade for caring college health workers Caring lecturers and staff at Coleg Cambria received a Lockdown Hero accolade for supporting students through the Coronavirus pandemic. The Health and Social Care department at Cambria’s Yale site in Wrexham is among the finalists vying for a prestigious Pearson National Teaching Award. Nominated by Lowri Jarvis, 17, and fellow learners on the Level 3 course, the team – including Claire Williams, Amy Campbell, Kate Davies, Wendy Fowler, Greg Rae and Stefanie Matthews – were praised for their “outstanding student and wellbeing support during lockdown”. Lowri, from Wrexham, said their enthusiasm and energy helped the cohort tackle the challenges of COVID-19 over the past 12 months.

Ysgol Tir Morfa in Rhyl given title of most thanked school in Wales

A SCHOOL for pupils with additional learning needs has been named the most thanked school in Wales. Ysgol Tir Morfa in Rhyl secured the title through the Teaching Awards Trust s Thank a Teacher campaign. As part of the campaign, students, staff, and parents at the school have been sending thank you cards to their teachers. Cards have been sent via the online portal between colleagues, and from children or parents to their teachers, in a collective effort to praise and acknowledge the individuals going the extra mile. Rhona O’Neill, headteacher at Ysgol Tir Morfa, said: Sending thank you cards through the Thank a Teacher campaignhas been a wonderful morale booster for our staff and families.
