Bat tests positive for rabies after biting adult in Pueblo PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) The Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment says a bat tested positive for rabies after biting an adult. According to PDPHE, the incident happened in the Regency Park area. “Unfortunately, an adult was bitten by the rabid bat and is receiving rabies vaccine to prevent illness,” stated Vicki Carlton program manager at the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment. Carlton added, “Rabies is caused by a virus transmitted by the bite of an infected animal. Rabies also can be transmitted if the infected animal’s saliva gets into a cut or break in the skin or through the eyes, nose, or mouth.”

Daily COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations are continuing to rise throughout the county while the number of vaccines administered at the FEMA-run site at the Colorado State Fairgrounds fall well short of the site’s capacity to administer 3,000 vaccinations each day. The county’s incidence rate, as of April 27, was about 317 cases per 100,000 county residents, according to Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment Director Randy Evetts, and the county’s one-week positivity rate was about 4.7%.

Sarah Martinez enters Pueblo City Council race for District 3

Sarah Martinez, a Pueblo native who works in youth substance abuse prevention, began her campaign for Pueblo City Council s District 3 seat on April 23, the latest of a group of young candidates hoping to reshape city government in the fall.  “I never thought I would be running for city council,” the 28-year-old said at her kickoff event at a home in Pueblo’s Aberdeen neighborhood. It was through my community work, learning how systems interact at a city level, connecting with several agencies where I found that I had a voice and that I could change systems.”  The event was attended by her campaign team, friends and several community members who endorsed Martinez, including Pueblo School District 60 board member Tommy Farrell. 

Pueblo remains in Level Yellow as Colorado s COVID-19 dial is retired

Colorado retired its statewide COVID-19 dial Friday, giving local counties and municipalities more local control over pandemic regulations and capacity restrictions. The state will maintain some limited requirements, but restrictions can now be determined at the local level. However, with Pueblo’s COVID-19 cases continuing to rise, the Pueblo Department of Public Health and Environment has opted to remain in Level Yellow under the state s dial framework. PDPHE Director Randy Evetts explained the decision to remain in yellow to Pueblo County commissioners on Thursday. “The current state of our COVID infection in the county is that we are seeing a pretty sharp increase in numbers. We’ve had almost 500 cases in the last seven days,” Evetts said.

Pueblo couple accidentally receives two different COVID-19 vaccines PUEBLO, Colo. (KRDO) Two people in Pueblo say they accidentally received two different doses of the COVID-19 vaccine and are worried they aren t the only ones. Back in March, Catherine and Ken Riddick went to the Pueblo mall to get their first dose of the vaccine. The couple tells KRDO they received Moderna, which is also what their white vaccine cards say. Then for their second dose 24 days later, they had to go to the State Fairgrounds. Ken Riddick saying they told workers multiple times they needed Moderna. They asked us what our first shot was actually several times and we answered Moderna every time, Ken says.
