Matias Echanove, a Geneva native, is a nomadic urban planner with a singular career path. His studies took him to London, New York and Tokyo, before he settled down in Mumbai in 2008. The Japanese stint was particularly decisive for the development of the 43-year-old’s urbanism philosophy.

EPFL, ETH Zurich and the Red Cross team up to bolster humanitarian aid with science
The Engineering Humanitarian Aid initiative, officially launched on 10 December 2020, will harness the expertise of Switzerland s two federal institutes of technology to benefit humanitarian aid programs. The effort will focus on the areas of energy and the environment, data sciences and digital technologies, and personalized health and related technologies.

Humanitarian aid organizations are now facing unprecedented challenges, which science and technology can help to overcome. For this reason, ETH Zurich, EPFL and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) have joined forces in the Engineering Humanitarian Aid initiative. The goal is to put the expertise of the two federal institutes of technology at the service of humanitarian aid.
