Taipei, Feb. 20 (CNA) The appointment of Chiu Tai-san (邱太三) to handle China affairs should be seen as a friendly gesture toward Beijing, as Chiu is known to be dovish in his approach to cross-strait issues, Taiwanese scholar Chao Chun-shan (趙春山) said Friday.
Chao s comment came after the Presidential Office named three new Cabinet-level officials, including the head of the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), Taiwan s China relations body, that day.
Chiu has previously held the number-two role in the council and has a high degree of familiarity with the legal systems of both Taiwan and China, Chao, a professor from the Institute of China Studies at Tamkang University, told CNA.

Taipei Mayor Ko Wen-je (柯文哲) yesterday used the social audio app Clubhouse for the first time to chat with the public about topics such as national defense and COVID-19 vaccines.
Ko logged on to the Clubhouse account of Taipei City Government spokeswoman Chen Chih-han (陳智菡) for a “town hall meeting” with the public during lunchtime from his office at Taipei City Hall.
Ko, who doubles as Taiwan People’s Party chairman, was asked to comment on President Tsai Ing-wen’s (蔡英文) plans to reshuffle top military and security officials in the Cabinet.
