REUTERS/Tom Brenner President Joe Biden signed an order on Friday limiting U.S. refugee admissions this year to the historically low 15,000 cap set under his predecessor Donald Trump, a senior administration official said, shelving a plan to raise it to 62,500 and drawing the ire of refugee advocates and some Democratic lawmakers. The decision was a blow to advocacy groups that wanted the Democratic president to move swiftly to reverse the refugee policies of the Republican Trump, who had set the 15,000 figure as a way to limit immigration. The senior administration official, speaking on condition of anonymity, forecast much increased admissions numbers in future years.

Biden holds off on increasing US refugee admissions for now

President Joe Biden on Friday walked back from an earlier pledge to increase refugee admissions to the United States and will keep in place a Trump administration cap of 15,000 for this year – for now. The reversal, which drew the ire of his fellow Democrats, comes as the Biden administration confronts a surge of migrants trying to cross the US-Mexico border and wrestles with a thicket of bureaucratic gaps in the US’s resettlement program left over by the Trump administration. The Democratic criticism forced the White House to clarify the president’s actions later on Friday, with press secretary Jen Psaki saying the president will revisit the question of raising the cap with an eye toward setting a “final, increased refugee cap for the remainder of this fiscal year by May 15”.

The FBI Used My Journalism to Charge a Jan 6 Insurrectionist

Shannon Stapleton/Reuters An Insider contributor s reporting led to federal charges for one of the men who stormed the Capitol on Jan. 6 Journalist Abigail Higgins explains why she declined to submit to an FBI interview about the case.  She also reflects on her own ambivalence, knowing her reporting could help send a source to prison. When I got out of the shower one morning at the end of March, I had a voicemail from the FBI. They wanted to talk. I assumed it was a scam. Then, I panic-shuffled through a mental rolodex of things I might have done to tick off the feds.
