Equality Act], a bill that would extend civil rights protections to prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity, but the measure faced an uphill battle to enactment [in the Senate], with Republicans almost uniformly opposed.

[I]t was the second time the Democratic-led House had passed the measure, known as the Equality Act, which seeks to amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to add explicit bans on discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people in both public and private spaces.
The top House Republican leader moved Wednesday (local time) to keep his splintering party intact - declining to take concrete action against a freshman US lawmaker whose extremist rhetoric prompted widespread outrage, while also moving to protect a senior party leader who faced calls for her ouster after backing Donald Trump s impeachment. The moves from Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy reflected the delicate path the GOP is blazing through the post-Trump political landscape as it seeks to regain power in Washington. On one hand, the party needs to regain its appeal with traditional Republicans - a wing of the party exemplified by Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming, the No 3 House GOP leader and daughter of a former vice president who trashed Trump s conduct surrounding the January 6 Capitol riot.
