Makabayan bloc lawmakers on Tuesday, March 11 blamed government for the death of Joseph Canlas, a peasant leader who died after contracting 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID 19) while under police detention.
Canlas, chairman of the Alyansang Magbubukid sa Gitnang Luzon, was among the activists who were arrested in simultaneous raids conducted by joint military and police operatives in Luzon during the recent observance of Holy Week.
He was reportedly arrested on the strength of a court-issued warrant. A gun was also allegedly found in his possession during the raid.
Deputy Minority Leader and Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Isagani Zarate said Canlas was healthy when arrested by police authorities last March.

Vice President Leni Robredo on Labor Day, May 1, echoed workers calls to end contractualization in the Philippines. Maging araw sana ito hindi lamang ng papuri at pasasalamat, kundi pati ng kongkretong aksyon sa mga isyung matagal nang idinadaing ng mga manggagawa: Ang pagtuldok sa ENDO at kontraktuwalisasyon, Robredo said in her Labor Day message on Saturday.
(May this day not only about praises and thanks, but also for concrete actions on issues long complained of by workers – to end ENDO and contractualization.) ENDO means end of contract, a term referring to schemes where workers are hired for a fixed period. Instead of regularizing workers which would entitle them benefits and the power to unionize, companies just rehire them as contractual workers

House deputy minority leader and Bayan Muna Representative Carlos Isagani Zarate said thousands involved in the Philippine hog industry stand to lose their jobs due to the negative impact of Executive Order No. 128.
“Lahat ng mga hog raisers o magbababoy ay tutol sa EO 128 pero itinuloy pa din ng Malacañang. Bakit ba palaging ang default reaction ng Duterte administration, lalo na ng DA, ay palagi ang pag-iimport at hindi ang tulungang paunlarin ang mga magsasaka at local na producers ng ating bansa (All our hog raisers are opposed to EO 128 but Malacañang still pursued it. Why is it always the default reaction of the Duterte administration, especially by the Department of Agriculture, to always import instead of supporting its own farmers and local producers)?” Zarate asked in a statement.
