ITV News Correspondent Robert Moore reports on the emotionally charged testimony of officers who defended the US Capitol
Police officers have told of how they thought they would die and were racially abused as they defended the US Capitol during the January 6 insurrection.
“This is how I’m going to die, defending this entrance,” Capitol Police Officer Aquilino Gonell recalled thinking as he testified at the emotional opening hearing of the congressional panel investigating the violence.
Sgt Gonell told House investigators he could feel himself losing oxygen as he was crushed by rioters – supporters of former President Donald Trump – as he was defending the Capitol in Washington DC.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Four police officers on Tuesday told lawmakers they were beaten, taunted with racial insults, heard threats including “kill him with his own gun” and thought they might die as they struggled to defend the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6 against a mob of then-President Donald Trump’s supporters.
Often tearful, sometimes profane, the officers called the rioters “terrorists” engaged in an “attempted coup.” During a 3-1/2 hour congressional hearing, they also criticized Republican lawmakers who have sought to downplay the attack.
“I feel like I went to hell and back to protect the people in this room,” said District of Columbia police officer Michael Fanone, referring to lawmakers. “The indifference shown to my colleagues is disgraceful,” Fanone added, slamming his hand onto the witness table.

Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) said Tuesday on CNN’s “The Lead” that she believed Republicans denying the severity of the January 6 Capitol riot and former President Donald Trump’s responsibility were “shameful.”
Anchor Jake Tapper said, “One of the things I find so troubling about all of this is you and Adam Kinzinger, and others are saying that they tried to steal the election, these MAGA forces tried to steal the election once, and they’re going to try again. And we don’t hear Kevin McCarthy and Steve Scalise and Elise Stefanik say, ‘no, no, no, we would never do that again.’ There is zero attempts at reassuring people that what you are suggesting is not true.”
