DEFENDANTS from Warrington who are facing serious criminal charges are facing huge delays before appearing in court. A Parliamentary report has warned that the coronavirus pandemic has left the courts system in England and Wales in ‘crisis’, with a backlog of cases that will take years to clear. Ministry of Justice figures show that Liverpool Crown Court, where most of Warrington’s crown court cases are heard, had 1,601 outstanding cases at the end of December. This was an increase of 13.1 per cent from the end of September and 43.2 per cent at the end of 2019, when there were 1,118. Chester Crown Court is also experiencing a backlog, with 578 cases outstanding at the end of December.
