SEATTLE Dr. Brent Jones was sworn in as interim superintendent of Seattle Public Schools on Monday.
Jones takes over for former Superintendent Denise Juneau, who initially announced she would step down when her contract expires in June, but then resigned two months early on May 1.
Juneau’s early departure allows Seattle Public Schools more time for the leadership change and to figure out what learning in the fall will look like, according to the district.
Jones joined the Seattle school district back in 2008 and worked as the district s chief officer of equity, partnerships and engagement until joining King County Metro in 2019 as the assistant general manager of strategy and partnerships.

Along with support, advocacy groups like WilCo Iris and PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays) pointed out continued work that must be done to protect LGBTQ+ people.
Howard Garrett, a liaison for students involved with WilCo Iris, a student-led LGBTQ+ safe space for youth hosted by the WSJA, condemned As a student liaison for Williamson Social Justice Alliance s LGBTQ+ youth, it is my mission to ensure acts of hatred are called out and condemned, Garrett said in a news release.
Garrett told The Tennessean the viral video is a representation of the county consistently dropping the ball on supporting diversity. To him, when a young person is proudly living their truth as Stevens did in his red prom dress to break stereotypes, it s the job of the community and adults to appreciate their courage.
U.S. News & World Report released its annual rankings of 24,000 public high schools with Oakland County’s International Academy again among the top 50 nationwide.
International Academy, a consortium which has about 1,500 students who reside in 13 Oakland County school districts including Birmingham, Bloomfield Hills, Huron Valley and South Lyon, ranked third in Michigan and 43rd nationwide.
Also ranking in the top 10 in Michigan were Novi High School at #7 and Northville High School, #10.
“Part of the reason we do well on rankings like this is that all of our students and families understand when they enroll in ninth grade that we are an all International Baccalaureate high school,” Associate Principal Chris Smith said. “It’s highly rigorous, the most challenging program a student in the United States can sign up for in high school… It attracts students who are highly motivated for an academic program.”

Cincinnati area teens have been trickling into COVID-19 vaccination clinics ever since Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine opened up vaccine eligibility to everyone 16 and older on March 29. Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear did the same a week later.
Until then, public health officials are working to get more and more eligible teens vaccinated. In some cases, that means bringing vaccination clinics to school buildings.
Milford High School in Clermont County hosted a vaccination clinic in partnership with Clermont Public Health last week. District spokesperson Wendy Planicka says about 200 people came to the clinic, 150 of which were students. The second dose will be available on May 17.
