Commissioners approve 2021 budget, anticipate ongoing challenges

The Franklin County commissioners on Tuesday approved a $493 million budget in general fund spending for the new year, which calls for no tax or fee increases while cutting some expenses and maintaining support for human service organizations. Outside of a few adjustments to the preliminary spending plan released in November, the final budget was in line with County Administrator Kenneth Wilson s initial recommendations.  But with the passing of the “responsible, sustainable, and forward-focused” budget, Wilson acknowledged the challenges the county faced this year will likely to continue in 2021. Under the recommended budget, only 11 of 24 county agencies financed through the general fund would see increases over their projected 2020 spending. A total of 18 agencies saw increases in last year s approved budget.
