Franklin County Commissioner Marilyn Brown retiring after serving 14 years

Updated: 10:47 AM EDT May 11, 2021 FRANKLIN COUNTY, Ohio Franklin County Commissioner Marilyn Brown announced Tuesday morning she is retiring to focus on being with her family. Brown was first elected as commissioner in 2006 and has served her position for over 14 years. Brown was considered a community trailblazer for family and domestic violence prevention, according to the Franklin County Board of Commissioners website. Her last day as commissioner is May 14.   I was honored and humbled by the voters confidence and hope I lived up to their expectations,” Brown said in a statement. The remaining two commissioners will appoint a replacement for up to 45 days, according to state law.  

Columbus mayor unveils slate of youth summer programs to reduce violence

Pools closed. Youth programs were canceled. Seasonal employment was hard to find. Amid a rampaging coronavirus pandemic last year, youngsters across Columbus likely found themselves without much to occupy their time when school let out for summer. Mayor Andrew J. Ginther said Thursday he s determined to prevent that from happening for a second year in a row. Speaking at a news conference outside the Driving Park Community Recreation Center, Ginther unveiled a slate of youth summer programming in the city made possible by public/private partnerships. Referring to “unprecedented investments we are making into our city’s young people,” Ginther said his hope is for the programming to help the city’s youth “build back some of what they’ve lost during this pandemic in a very challenging year.”

Ohio GOP lawmakers introduce voter suppression bill Ohio’s new voting bill, HB 294, would place restrictions on mail-in ballots, early voting, and drop boxes.  Loading the player. Ohio has introduced a new voter suppression bill championed by Republican elected officials, joining Georgia and Florida which have signed similar legislation into law this spring. The bill, Bill Seitz (R-Cincinnati) and Sharon Ray (R-Wadsworth), and replete with restrictions on mail-in ballot “curing” or corrections, early voting, and reduces the number of drop box locations to just one per county, according to the Huffington Post. If passed, HB 294– also called the Elections Modernization and Security Act– would turn a number of voter restrictions into law.
