A pair of gun control bills passed the U.S. House of Representatives last week and are now heading for the Senate. Republican Rep. Madison Cawthorn kept a campaign promise to vote against such proposals, delivering a fiery speech on the House floor telling Democrats that “here in real America, when we say, ‘come and take it,’” referring to a popular Second Amendment rallying cry, “we damn well mean it.”
Cawthorn also said that he spoke for millions of Americans, and specifically, the 700,000 people in his district, but as debate over HR8 and HR1446 continues, there’s at least one constituent in his district who disagrees.

WASHINGTON (March 4, 2021) Amidst a surge in firearms sales, lawmakers in the Senate and House have introduced legislation expanding background checks for all gun purchases. Background checks are simple, easy, and they save lives. That s why more than 90 percent of Americans support our legislation to make sure no guns are sold in this country without a background check, Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Connecticut, and the lead sponsor of the background check measure in the Senate, said in a statement Tuesday.
His bill has 45 Democratic co-sponsors, including Maryland Sens. Ben Cardin and Chris Van Hollen.
California AG office withholding data on gun sales, restraining orders from researchers

Mar. 4 Attorney General Xavier Becerra s office is withholding gun violence data from a state-funded research institution tasked by lawmakers with evaluating California s firearm regulations and also is directing universities to destroy records the agency previously released.
Researchers at the UC Davis California Firearm Violence Research Center say that over the last several years, the Department of Justice has made it increasingly difficult to access data only it maintains, despite a legal mandate to provide the records.
The Legislature in 2016 passed a law to establish and fund the center, which works alongside an existing gun violence research program at UC Davis. The idea was to support independent research to identify policies that best prevent deaths and injuries caused by gun violence.
