Officials from the World Golf Championships-Workday Championship at The Concession, which was held at The Concession Golf Club in February, announced Thursday that the tournament raised more than $400,000 for organizations in the Bradenton-Sarasota area.
Those organizations include the First Tee of Sarasota/Manatee and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine Student Scholarship Fund.
“It was an honor to host a World Golf Championships event and be granted the opportunity to showcase the Bradenton-Sarasota Area and The Concession Golf Club to the world,” Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau executive director Elliott Falcione said in a release. “But learning just how significantly the tournament also impacted our local community through charitable donation is truly icing on the cake. PALMETTO, Fla. (WWSB) - Seven years later, the family of Javare Thomas might finally get some closure. Palmetto Police believe they know who is responsible for the death of the 26-year-old.
“Sometimes it’s just a matter of talking to the right people, people finally coming forward and people talking about what they know,” said Chief Scott Tyler with the Palmetto Police Department.
Palmetto Police say 28-year-old Ricardo Garcia shot and killed Thomas in March of 2014 on Haben Boulevard not far from the Bradenton Area Convention Center. Police say Garcia had been in a fight at The Hall nightclub in Palmetto earlier. He thought he had pulled up to the car that had the person he fought in it. It turns out, that person was in another vehicle.
Delta Air Lines extends flights at Sarasota-Bradenton airport
Travelers between the Sarasota-Bradenton area and Detroit will be able to fly directly between the two areas all summer.
Delta Air Lines has extended its service between Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, the local airport said Tuesday. Flights between Sarasota-Bradenton and Detroit via Delta will run once per day until Sept. 6.
“We are excited to see Delta Air Lines extending the nonstop service to Detroit through the summer,” Rick Piccolo, president and CEO of Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, said. “This daily flight will provide travelers access to another major hub city in the Delta network.”

Southwest Airlines, which just started air service at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport last week, will offer seasonal service to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, from mid-April to early May, the airport announced on Thursday.
Service between Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport and Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport in Wisconsin is scheduled to run Saturdays from April 17 through May 8.
Southwest will also run a second daily flight to Chicago Midway International Airport in March and up to two times a day in April.
A Sarasota-Bradenton-to-Milwaukee route performed well via AirTran Airways before that airline was purchased by Southwest and went dark at the local airport, said Elliott Falcione, executive director of the Bradenton Area Convention and Visitors Bureau.
