Earlier in its letter dated March 1, BIF had called attention to the Budget-related notification, and rued that the telecom industry will be liable to pay basic customs duty (BCD) and Social Welfare Surcharge (SWS) on inputs or raw materials for manufacturing of telecommunication equipment falling in the said list.

As per a latest report, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has put the internet service under scrutiny in order to check if it complies with all regulatory laws. This comes after the Broadband India Forum (BIF) alleged that Musk’s Starlink internet service does not comply with India’s regulatory framework. For the unaware, BIF represents Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Facebook, and OneWeb, direct competitor to Starlink.

DoT is examining if Elon Musk-backed Starlink fulfills existing telecom and technology laws days after reports of the company not complying with telecom guidelines in India surfaced.

The DoT is also reportedly looking if Starlink fulfills Indian telecom laws and is in consumer interest and national security.
Earlier this month BIF that represents Amazon, Facebook, and Google, asked TRAI to block Starlink’s pre-orders in India.
It had noted that Starlink does not have its ground or earth stations in India nor satellite frequency authorisation from ISRO
If it is legally established that Starlink’s offer violates existing telecom regulations, is not in the consumer interest and also has national security implications, then action may be taken against the firm.
