Man accused of murdering cabbie brought to Bradford Crown Court for first time

Basharat A MAN accused of murdering a Bradford taxi driver nearly 20 years ago was today brought to Bradford Crown Court for the first time for a conference with his barrister. Ricardo Linton denies murdering Mohammed Basharat, 33, of Leylands Lane, Heaton, on October 20, 2001. Linton, 45, of no fixed address, will be tried at Bradford Crown Court on June 21. The hearing is expected to last up to five weeks. Today, he attended at the court from custody to speak with his barrister Rachel Darby. The case was relisted for next Friday when Judge Jonathan Rose said the defence statement must be served. Mr Basharat was killed at the offices of Little Horton Taxis, in Park Lane, Little Horton, Bradford.

Bradford Crown Court’s growing backlog of cases is down to years of chronic underfunding as well as the coronavirus pandemic, a leading local barrister said today. Stephen Wood QC, head of the city’s Broadway House Chambers Criminal Team, was responding to news that the crown court had 920 outstanding cases at the end of December. This was an increase of 6.2% from the end of September and 27.1% at the end of 2019, when there were 724. A Parliamentary report has warned that the pandemic has left the courts system in England and Wales in crisis with a backlog of cases that will take years to clear.

1/1 A KILLER and sex attacker serving a life sentence caused almost £25,000-worth of damage to prison cells over a six-week period. Scott Sorby was given a minimum 24-year tariff when sentenced for the murder and attempted rape of a 94-year-old woman after breaking into a care home, in January 2011. Sorby was out of prison on licence at the time, having been released part way through a four-and-a-half-year sentence, also for attempted rape. The then 20-year-old assailant battered the defenceless woman and dragged her into her bathroom, where he continued the attack as he also tried to rape her. She died in hospital two months later, by then aged 95, from pneumonia brought on by her ordeal.
