Maddie s Mitten March will host a winter-gear giveaway with coats, hats and gloves from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 3, outside the North Aurora Police Department, 200 S. Airport Road. People in need are invited.
Maddie s Mitten March, a North Aurora-based nonprofit, will distribute gear from a converted passenger bus. Only one family at a time will be allowed on the bus and anyone entering the bus must wear a mask. If you don t have one, organizers will provide one.
The event is in place of the annual distribution that is held in partnership with Double Yolk Restaurant.
The nonprofit s mission is to collect clothing and monetary donations to provide winter clothing to needy Kane County residents.

“Facts matter,” so we hear. But at a time when – maybe they don’t – social studies in school could be on the ropes.
Eighty percent of public school social studies teachers in a new survey say they need more help with instructional materials and training. But Dean Cantu, associate dean and director of the department of education, counseling, and leadership at Bradley University in Peoria, is more optimistic.
“I think we’ve made tremendous strides,” said Cantu, who is also executive director of the Illinois Council for the Social Studies. “The emphasis on inquiry, the emphasis on primary documents, interpretation, and analysis, with the emphasis on students taking informed action in their communities – these truly are standards of the 21st Century.
