Peru: Health brigades deployed to Cusco provinces for vaccination of elders | News | ANDINA

Adults aged above 80 in more than 10 provinces of Peru s southern Cusco region will receive the first vaccine dose against COVID-19 on May 5 and 6, the Regional Health Management Office (Geresa) in Cusco announced on Tuesday. Thus, vaccination centers will be set up in the following towns: Anta, Calca, Pisac, Urubamba, Santa Ana, Maranura, Sicuani, Tinta, Checacupe, Marangani, Acomayo, Paruro, Accha, Yaurisque, Urcos, Quiquijana, Oropesa, Ccatcca, Ocongate, Paucartambo, Challabamba, Colquepata, and Huancarani. On the other hand, the immunization process in the provinces of Chumbivilcas and Espinar will be announced in due course.

The City of Cusco received the fourth batch of vaccines against COVID-19, consisting of a total of 8,260 doses to immunize the remaining health personnel. Following arrival at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport, the personnel in charge and the Armed Forces carried out the transfer of the batch under strict security measures. Regional Health Management (Geresa Cusco) Director Tania Saldivar reminded reporters that the second dose is administered 21 days after the first one. On the other hand, the vaccination phases have been modified. Meanwhile, planning is being carried out to vaccinate older adults, as well as members of the Police and Army.

The latest situational report issued on Wednesday morning indicates that Cusco region has recorded the highest number of deaths due to COVID-19 in less than 24 hours. According to the statistics, deaths in said region have amounted to 470 so far this year. The accumulated amount of infected people is 14,056, and 435 were confirmed in one day, 309 of whom are active and remain contagious.  In addition, there are 348 hospitalized patients in COVID-19 wards and there are no beds available in intensive care units (ICU) at hospitals. The provinces with the most deaths and confirmed cases of infection are Cusco, La Convencion, and Canchis.

A second batch of Sinopharm vaccines arrived at Alejandro Velasco Astete Airport in the city of Cusco on Thursday to continue with the immunization of health personnel, who are on the frontline in the fight against COVID-19 across the southern Peruvian region. A total of eight boxes consisting of 6,481 vaccine doses arrived in the area. Immediately, these were transferred to the warehouses of Cusco s Regional Health Management Office (Geresa) from where they will be distributed to hospitals and healthcare establishments in this jurisdiction. Geresa s Health Director Tania Saldivar reported that they are completing the use of the total doses from the first batch.
