The US is leading a slow revival in overseas air travel as people jump at the chance to fly to destinations in Mexico and the Caribbean without quarantines or other Covid-related restrictions.
New York to Santo Domingo and Santiago de los Caballeros, the two biggest cities in the Dominican Republic, are among the world’s busiest overseas routes this year, aviation analytics company Cirium says.
Neither made the top 10 before the pandemic. Orlando to San Juan in the US territory of Puerto Rico sits at second-busiest overall, behind Moscow to Simferopol in the disputed Crimea region.
Seven of the 10 most active international city pairs feature the US, suggesting one of the world’s most advanced inoculation programmes is freeing demand that has been building for a year.
AS the first of the planes took off from the Sydney tarmac bound for Canberra, the public face behind the airline entering the market is promising additional discount fares between Australia’s other major cities.
Rex Airlines has introduced an initial $99 one-way fare on the prize route from the nation’s largest city to its national capital.
But airline deputy chairman John Sharp said Rex plans to offer more affordable flights from Canberra out of Melbourne first and then from Brisbane and Adelaide in the coming months that will remain competitive.
“I can see services beyond just that to other capital cities,” Mr Sharp told ABC Breakfast on Monday (April 19).

(Bloomberg) Dirt-cheap fares are popping up from airlines brave enough to expand or start out amid the Covid crisis, as they try to eke out sales and get a jump on competitors that have pared back operations.
Airlines worldwide cut $1 billion of expenses a day last year to cope with the slump in passengers, and that’s given them some wiggle room to lower ticket prices. More broadly, cost savings are emerging for carriers as unwanted planes become available on the cheap. Thousands of laid off flight crew are also eager for work, allowing some airlines to go on hiring sprees.
