Haffkine institute to come up with new protocols and treatments for rabies

India accounts for 36 per cent of death occurred due to
rabies in the world. In India rabies is still not a notifiable disease. The National Centre for Disease Control has selected
Haffkine Institute for Training, Research & Testing (HITRT) as a Regional Coordinator(RC) under programme for Intersectoral Coordination for prevention and control of zoonotic diseases like rabies, bird flu etc.
The institute will be closely working with all the various departments – Animal Husbandry department, Wildlife department, Public Health department, Scientists and Researchers to come up with new protocols for treatments of rabies, said by Dr Nishigandha Naik, Director (In Charge) of the Haffkine Institute.
